It was the warmest May in La Ronge out of 58 years of record keeping.

That’s according to data from Environment and Climate Change Canada, which showed the monthly mean temperature for May in the tri-communities was 13.3 C. That’s a 4.9 C departure from normal.

It was also the warmest May on record for Key Lake (47 years) and North Battleford (82 years). It was the second warmest May in Saskatoon out of 125 years of record keeping.

“It was quite the warm month in Saskatchewan and most of Western Canada,” meteorologist Terri Lang wrote in her monthly statistical update.

“Three stations recorded their warmest May ever (Key Lake with a relatively short period of record, La Ronge with a longer record, and North Battleford with an even longer record). The other stations in Saskatchewan tracked all had in the top 10 of warmest Mays. The daily temperature plots really do tell the story of May.”

Nineteen out of 31 days in May in La Ronge were 20 C or higher. Three days reached 27 C with La Ronge breaking a record on May 31 with 27.4 C. The previous record was 27.1 C set in 1997.

On that same day, Last Mountain Lake, Prince Albert, Waskesiu, Watrous and Wynyard all also broke records. The highest temperature was recorded in Watrous where it reached 32.1 C, breaking the previous record of 31.1 C set in 1972.

Environment Canada is forecasting a rainy weekend in La Ronge with a risk of a thunderstorm on Friday and Saturday. There’s expected to be five millimetres of rain Friday evening with a further 10 to 20 mm of rain on Saturday.

On Sunday, there’s a 60 per cent chance of showers but the skies will clear leading to more sunny days and hot temperatures next week.
