Council approves banner project honouring local veterans
La Ronge council voted unanimously at a regular meeting this week to allow the installation of up to 25 banners honouring local veterans along La Ronge Avenue and Patterson Park.
The request to council came from Chuck Mackinnon and Teron Roberts, who are working on the project with support from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 371 President Shaune Lapworth. The project involves the installation of 30-inch by 60-inch banners on electrical and lighting poles with the banners to be raised in the spring of each year and taken down for the winter following Remembrance Day.
“Each banner includes a photo of a local veteran, their name, the conflict they served in, as well as the years of their births and deaths,” their letter to council stated. “Ultimately, there may be around 20 of these banners.”
In order for the project to move ahead, permission from SaskPower is still needed to install the banners. Once given the go-ahead, they will start with the placement of three banners on La Ronge Avenue in the vicinity of the Backlund Street intersection at the post office.
