Hockey school offers skills training and development for up and coming athletes

Dozens of the young people from the tri-communities are busy this week learning new skills at the La Ronge Ice Wolves 2023 Hockey School.

The four-day camp began Monday and continues until Thursday at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski explained 62 youth between the ages of five and 17 are participating, which is on par with previous years.

“On the ice, we have been doing powerskating. I think today’s game, with how fast it is, we are doing a lot of edge work, crossovers, forwards, backwards skating, just trying to make sure they have the best opportunity to keep improving during the season and to advance to the next level whenever that opportunity arises,” he said.

“We started doing some passing, shooting, tight turns with pucks, more edge work, so a whole lot of variety. All of the fundamentals of the game and then, off ice, we have been doing a dynamic warm up to start with and then we’ve done circuit training, especially just in the morning. Stuff that our players do. In the afternoon, the kids get a little tired, so we usually do a game of kickball or soccer, something a little more fun to reward them.”

Participants have been split into two groups with those five to 11 in one group and those 12 to 17 in a second group. The hockey school will end Thursday with a full game for each group, a barbecue and an awards ceremony.

“They will have to keep on developing, but I think there are some kids who have some potential to possibly [join] the Ice Wolves,” Kaminski noted.

“They have to do their part to be disciplined and working out on and off the ice. The biggest thing I get out of it is already, in one day, there are a couple kids who could barely skate and now they are skating the length of the ice without falling. It’s baby steps, but those baby steps are huge for those kids. It gives them confidence.”

Players on the Ice Wolves will begin arriving in La Ronge on Sept. 3 with the first day of training set for Sept. 5. The first exhibition game will be held Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. against the Flin Flon Bombers at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. There will be other exhibition games held Sept. 11 with four in a row starting Sept. 14 through Sept. 17.

The first regular game of the 2023-2024 season will be held Sept. 22 when the Ice Wolves travel to take on the Melfort Mustangs.
