Summer in La Ronge fifth warmest on record

Sep 1, 2023 | 5:17 PM

La Ronge had the fifth warmest summer out of 57 years of record keeping.

That’s according to data from Environment and Climate Change Canada, which notes the seasonal mean temperature for June, July and August was 17.1 C, a 1.1 C departure from normal. The hottest summer on record for La Ronge was in 2021.

June was the warmest on record with a monthly mean temperature of 17.9 C with the normal mean temperature being 14.5 C.

“August, itself, wasn’t all too outstanding with respect to temperature, certainly not as much as May and June were and July, not so much either, but August was pretty close to average with respect to temperature-wise for La Ronge,” Meteorologist Terri Lang said.

“[August] came out to be about the 17th warmest out 59 years, so still warm, but not as high as some of the other months that we’ve seen.”

The monthly mean temperature for August was 16.9 C, a 0.8 C departure from normal. August was also the 22 driest on record with 56.4 millimeters of precipitation.

“Most of western Canada, with the exception of a little piece of eastern Manitoba, was above average for the summer, along with the Northwest Territories and into Nunavut, so a really strong pattern overall and it explains why most of western Canada is still on fire,” Lang said.

As for the Labour Day long weekend, Saturday will be mainly sunny with a high of 25 C. Sunday will be cloudy with a high of 19 C and Monday is forecasted to include a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 15 C.

“It is sort of the last kick at the can when it comes to summer and before the kids go back to school,” Lang said.

“Just keep in mind the heat, of course, and that smoke is probably going to be around, unfortunately, just because the fires are still burning away and we are expecting some pretty fair fire conditions over the next couple of days with the heat and wind. Expect that smoke to be in the area.”
