New principal for Churchill Community High School

Kristianna Merasty has taken over as the new principal of La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School.

“It’s something I have worked towards for a long time,” she said.

“Last year, I took a year off and I went to work for Lac La Ronge Indian Band Education in their central office, however, I really missed the kids and wanted to come back. When this opportunity came, I was like ‘there’s an opportunity to come back in a leadership position, but also work with kids still.’”

Merasty is taking over from Scott Tomporowski, who remains at Churchill but is teaching Food Studies and Math 10 and 20 this academic year. Merasty has 18 years of experience at Churchill, including eight years as the vice principal.

She holds a Bachelor of Education from the Northern Teacher Education Program, as well as a Master’s of Education from the University of Regina.

“It has been very helpful just with different things to make sure there is that continuity within the change,” Merasty said about the former principal still on staff.

“I am looking forward to just keep improving our school and making it a better place. Making sure we are welcoming, making sure our expectations are high for our students and making sure it is a safe space for our kids.”

Churchill Community High School is one of the largest schools in the Northern Lights School Division with more than 500 students between Grades 7 to 12. The first day of classes were Tuesday and Merasty noted it was a busy day with a lot of returning and new students registering.

Since Churchill is short one teacher, Merasty will also be teaching Wellness 10 this semester in addition to the principalship.
