Northlands College unveils new Creighton Cultural Centre

Northlands College has opened a new Culture Centre in Creighton.

In a media release issued Thursday, its being called a significant milestone in the college’s commitment to celebrating and preserving the heritage of Northern Indigenous cultures.

Culture Centres are meant to demonstrate Northlands College’s dedication to Indigenous values and the pivotal role Northerners play in the institution’s strategic plan.

The opening ceremony held Thursday began with a prayer led by Elders, followed by a pipe ceremony and songs from the Northern Lights Women Singers. Dignitaries from Creighton, Cumberland house, Denare beach, and Flin Flon attended the event.

“At Northlands College, our foundation is built on the teachings of our Elders and the profound wisdom embedded in our culture,” Karsten Henriksen, President & CEO of Northlands College, said.

“Our commitment to learners is shaped by the principles that have been passed down through generations.”

Henriksen explained Northlands College’s role in Indigenization, stating the college is proud to lead the way in integrating Indigenous perspectives into every facet of our institution. He said the Culture Centre stands as a testament to the institution’s dedication to preserving and promoting the heritage northern communities.

The Culture Centre will become a hub for cultural learning, education, and community engagement with the goal of fostering a deep appreciation for the diverse traditions that define the North.
