Seasonal temperatures arrive, some snowfall in forecast

Many Central Saskatchewan residents have been enjoying the abnormally warm weather for this time of year but unfortunately, the cold weather is fast approaching.

Communities have been experiencing above-normal temperatures throughout November and finally, the cold has caught up to the calendar.

As Environment Canada Meteorologist Samantha Mauti explains, the temperatures will drop but not too much compared to what we’ve seen.

“The circulation of the atmosphere is generally that upper trough is moving in right now, however, much of Central Saskatchewan is on that border between the ridging and the troughing so that’s why you’re seeing a bit of a disagreement between some of the temperature,” she said.

“Generally, that means cooler temperatures and you’ll be experiencing that today and tomorrow – the low single digits and low double digits. The last time you would have experienced temperatures below normal was around the end of October.”

Normals for this time of year include -5 as the high and -15 for the low in Prince Albert while in other places Like North Battleford, they hover around -5 to -10 and in Melfort they are around the same at -6 to -10.

One thing associated with cold weather is the presence of snow. However, little to none has fallen in the Prairies yet in November with the only notable snowfall this season coming at the end of October. Mauti says that one thing to blame for the lack of snow is that it’s been dryer than normal.

“So far in November, the area has seen less than 50 per cent of the precipitation that you would normally see this time of year,” she explained.

Additionally, she added that there is a chance of snow this week for parts Central Saskatchewan with flurries projected to fall on Sunday and into Monday.
