Tri-community men honoured at recent gala

The dedication demonstrated by men in the tri-communities haven’t gone unnoticed thanks to the efforts of the Piwapan Women’s Centre.

A Dinner and Awards Night was held Nov. 24 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre, where 18 men were honoured for the good work they are doing in the region.

Relationship Wellness Coordinator Ryan Veteri explained approximately 100 people attended the event, which he described as a good turn out.

“That’s an excellent number. We really only printed off 100 tickets because we weren’t quite sure what the attendance would be like,” he said.

“It was a free event and there was actually a request that came in for tickets, but we had ran out. We’re going to look at increasing it for next year.”

Those recognized with awards included (Mentorship) Roger Ratt, Joseph Ratt, Eric Choquette, Tony White, John Halkett and John Sanderson; (Humanitarian) Rory Ballantyne; (Arts and Culture) Nigel Bell and Allen Morrow; (Moshom) Floyd Brown; (Napesis) Theron Roberts; and Shawn Roberts (Environmental Champion).

Some men were honoured in multiple categories such as Sonny Montilla (Philanthropist, Entrepreneur and Humanitarian), Christopher Mirasty (Humanitarian and Mentorship), Paul Ricklefs (Humanitarian and Philanthropist), and Ryan Brooks (Mentorship and Moshum).

A supper was also served at the gala, as well as entertainment from magician and hypnotist Roger Boucher. Veteri noted it was a family-friendly event.

“There are a lot of events happening where there is only one person who can win, where we like to acknowledge everyone who comes through,” he said.

“The people who are nominating the individuals have taken the time to point out some really great work that all the individuals are doing within the community.”
