Zelensky sets provincial powerlifting record

As his career as junior division powerlifter comes to a close, Air Ronge’s Tim Zelensky has left a lasting legacy.

At the Last Chance Powerlifting Competition in Moose Jaw this past weekend, Zelensky set the largest junior total in Saskatchewan history. He placed first after achieving a total of 730 kilograms, having squatted 250 kg, benched 175 kg and deadlifted 305 kg.

“This is my last year as a junior, so I was just trying to put up a big total,” he said.

“I competed in nationals every year, so last year I got bronze, this year I got bronze as well. I got gold this year in the Western Championships in Manitoba. The only reason I did this competition is because it’s the last time I would be able to compete as a junior and I wanted to move the record up for the 83s (weight class), and I managed to do that.”

At the 2023 Canadian Powerlifting Union National Championship in Vancouver in February, Zelensky achieved a total of 706 kg, and at the 2023 Western Canadian Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships in Brandon in August, he achieved a total of 700 kg.

“I would say it was a little bit different than what I did for the last competition,” Zelensky said about his record-breaking total in Moose Jaw.

“A lot more sets of eight, so a lot more volume. I went up in body weight a little bit, but I stayed in the same weight class.”

Zelensky, who is in his second year of Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan, has a goal of competing internationally. He will now compete in the open division, which he described as more competitive.

Zelensky also plans on competing again at the Western Championships next year in Moose Jaw.
