Ice roads in Far North open to traffic

Feb 2, 2024 | 5:09 PM

Two northern ice roads have opened with a third expected to open to traffic on Saturday.

That’s according to an email from the Ministry of Highways, which states both the Stony Rapids to Fond du Lac and Fond du Lac to Uranium City ice roads are now open.

The Stony Rapids to Fond du Lac road is open to a maximum weight of 9,600 kg, while the Fond du Lac to Uranium City road is open to a maximum weight of 7,586 kg. Crews will be working on both roads by flooding some of the thinner sections of ice.

The Wollaston Lake ice road will open Saturday morning to a maximum weight of 9,600 kg.

“Crews are flooding some of the thinner sections of ice and will continue to flood the rough patches next week,” read an email from the Ministry of Highways.

Ice roads connect northern communities to supplies and services in southern Saskatchewan. Ice roads usually open in mid-February and typically close for the season at the end of March or until the weather allows. Ice roads are the most efficient way to deliver heavy supplies and allow people to travel to and from isolated communities.

Ice depth is a crucial part of maintenance and crews work diligently to make sure ice is the appropriate thickness. They also routinely monitor ice conditions and thickness to ensure roads are safe to travel.
