Woman rescued after vehicle plunges into Lac La Ronge

Feb 5, 2024 | 4:10 PM

A woman escaped a vehicle that fell through the ice on Lac La Ronge on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, La Ronge RCMP received a report that a vehicle had broken through the ice and was surrounded by open water with the driver sitting on the roof. The Canadian Rangers were called and were quickly deployed to the area of English Narrows.

According to the Canadian Rangers, the woman and her dog ventured onto the frozen lake, seemingly unaware of the thin ice beneath them. As they drove further onto the lake, the ice gave way, plunging the vehicle into the freezing water.

“Equipped with specialized gear, including dry suits, life jackets, and a canoe, the Canadian Rangers navigated icy waters to rescue the distressed duo,” a public statement from the group states.

“Both the woman and her dog, visibly shaken but stable, received immediate first aid and were then transported to La Ronge Health Centre.”

Cpl. Shane Marion of the La Ronge RCMP detachment commended the quick response, emphasizing the importance of the Canadian Rangers’ local expertise. The ice rescue showcased the dedication and bravery of La Ronge’s RCMP and Canadian Rangers, the release adds.

The RCMP advises residents should be familiar with where they are planning on going if they are travelling on the ice, especially with the weather experienced in the region this winter.

larongeNOW reached out to the woman who was rescued, but didn’t receive a response by publishing.
