Sask. teen wins lacrosse tournament in Australia with Canadian team

A 16-year-old teen from Wahpeton Dakota Nation is back home after winning the 2024 International Indoor Junior Lacrosse (IIJL) Commonwealth Cup in Australia.

Brody Mcleod was part of the Canadian team, chosen by the Canadian Lacrosse League, which was able to beat teams from Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide.

He told paNOW the team was looking for a couple of lefties for the tournament and he put his name forward.

Despite not knowing too much about his game, Mcleod said the coaches were happy with the player they got.

“They said I was playing hard and playing good,” he said.

In four games, Mcleod scored four goals and added an assist for five points. This included two goals in the Championship game against players from the three Australian teams.

Despite that, his first goal against the Adelaide Thunder was one he’ll remember the most since it was the first time he scored for a Canadian team but also because it caught him a bit off guard.

“I didn’t know it was gonna go in. I got passed the ball and I just shot it,” Mcleod said.

The moment they won is also a memory Mcleod won’t soon forget. While lifting the trophy was great, Mcleod hoped for a bit more.

“It felt cool winning the cup, but I wish they had gold medals to bring home with.”

Meanwhile, McLeod explained the whole tournament and the time he spent in Australia was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

He also joked he’ll remember it as the trip he got to see kangaroos for the first time.
