Back-to-back wins for Trapper Competition contestants

Mar 4, 2024 | 4:52 PM

Richard Charles and Clarissa Burns were the winners of the Lac La Ronge Winter Festival’s King and Queen Trapper Competition.

Both individuals also dominated the event in 2023 and are coming off recent wins at the Prince Albert Winter Festival. Charles placed first in snowshoeing, axe throwing, log sawing, portage and buckskin portions for a total of 45 points, while Burns placed first in the snowshoeing, log toss, rope winding and animal calling portions for a total of 38 points.

As the winners of the competition, both individuals won $1,500 and a trophy.

“It feels good because I am getting up there in age and I am still managing to do pretty good,” Burns, of Prince Albert, said. “I was very happy. Everything went smoothly. I have no complaints. It was such a good turnout and everyone just enjoyed the whole weekend”

Burns explained she no longer regularly practices for the competition, but noted she stays in shape and sticks to a gym routine. As someone who has competed for many years, she said been taking a different role by teaching the younger generation how to prepare for the event. She noted it was nice to see a few new faces participating at the Lac La Ronge competition this year.

Burns recently placed second at a similar event in La Pas, Man. (lost to her sister) and she plans on taking part in upcoming competitions in Pelican Narrows and Stanley Mission.

larongeNOW reached out to Charles for an interview, but didn’t receive a reply by publishing.
