Stanley Mission Winter Festival bringing residents together this week

Mar 12, 2024 | 2:29 PM

The 43th annual Stanley Mission Winter Festival began on Monday with the Youth Fun Night.

It will continue throughout the week with a Community Sliding Party on Tuesday and the Missinipe Grand Ole Talent Show on Wednesday.

Those events will be followed by the Community Vehicle Parade and Community Fun Night on Thursday, and Inter-Agency Snowshoe Baseball and a $10,000 TV Bingo on Friday.

Winter Festival Trapper events also start on Friday and end Saturday with the indoor portion and the official crowning. The King and Queen Trappers will both win $1,000 for both the 18 to 45 age group, as well as 46 and up (Masters).

“I would say it is really neat to see that we get a lot of people who come back, and we get new people who come and they take everybody by surprise,” Organizer Gordon McKenzie said about the King and Queen Trappers Competition. “It’s keeps things interesting.”

Saturday will also include a Jigging Contest and Buckskin Parade, along with fireworks at 11 p.m. to finish off the 2024 Winter Festival. McKenzie noted out of towners might particularly be interested in the Flour Packing Competition, which will be in memory of long-time resident Johnny Charles. The details of that event are still being finalized.

An event posted with further details. (Facebook)

“He used to compete in all the trappers events in the 80s and 90s. He was an elite performer so to say. We have a photo of him flour packing back in the 80s and he was carrying 1,200 pounds,” McKenzie said.

“We will give him the namesake for this one. It will be really great to honour him because him and his family all partake, and they make it such a great event to enjoy and spectate for everybody.”

The majority of the Stanley Mission Winter Festival events will occur at the Stanley Mission Community Hall.

“We look forward to having everybody come out. We are excited to kick things off and we are looking forward to seeing everybody,” McKenzie said.
