An annual Women’s Conference organized by the Piwapan Woman’s Centre and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Health Services came to an end on Friday.

The two-day event began March 14 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre and this year’s theme was self-care. It began with opening remarks by Piwapan executive director Karen Sanderson and, over the two days, there were several keynote speakers and facilitators who spoke on a variety of topics.

Those who presented included Jennifer Cook-Roberts (safety planning and self-care), Carolann McDonald (cultural yoga), Christopher Halkett (finding balance) and Matthew Maurer (cyber safety). There were also self-care activities like crafts, hands-on healing, hair, makeup, nails, and foot soaks.

Thursday evening also included a special presentation of The Deadly Aunties Comedy Show.

“I think it is very important because to help people understand themselves for one,” Piwapan social media coordinator Jordan Bird said about hosting the conference.

“I do understand there are a lot of people out there who don’t understand what it means to take care of themselves in a mental health perspective or even just a personal look perspective. When you look good, you feel good and, when you leave these events, it leaves you with some empowerment. That’s what this is all about is empowering our women and our people. That’s why we have our conference and galas, so we can honour and empower everyone in all walks of life.”

Bird explained this year’s Women’s Conference proved to be quite popular. Last year, he said 40 to 70 people attended, but noted on Thursday alone there were nearly 200 attendees. Aside from the activities mentioned above, lunch and supper were also provided, along with daily door prizes.

Bird wanted to thank all the volunteers and facilitators who made it a successful event.

“It was such a great turnout,” Bird noted.

“The energy that I felt personally was over the roof. I was emotional, but very excited and happy throughout every day that we were here.”

Piwapan is also planned a Men’s Conference for April 11 and 12. It will feature Conway Kootenay, who will perform a comedy show, as well as facilitate a healing workshop.
