La Ronge man facing multiple charges after trying to drive into police

A 37-year-old La Ronge man is in custody and will appear in court next month after trying to hit police with his vehicle as they were conducting traffic stops last weekend.

The Meadow Lake Crime Reduction Team (CRT) were on HWY 2 and had attempted to pull over a vehicle on a routine stop when the driver refused and continued at high speed. While police did initially follow, they backed off as the vehicle drove into a residential area.

According to a release from RCMP, the local detachment also began to search for the vehicle and found it on Jimmy Roberts Road.

Once the driver was told he was under arrest, he drove towards a pedestrian officer and the officer had to move out of the way. The release explained this time they did give chase and the driver did a u-turn before driving towards police who needed to swerve.

“This was an incredibly dangerous situation. It’s very fortunate that no one – including police officers, members of the public, or the suspect himself – was hurt,” says S/Sgt. Ryan How, north district manager for Saskatchewan RCMP’s Saskatchewan Enforcement Response Team in the release.

“That’s very much thanks to the quick thinking and collaboration of all the responding Saskatchewan RCMP officers. It’s an unfortunate reality that our officers have to be ever-ready to evade deliberate attempts to harm them while they work to uphold community safety.”

The driver was arrested and through investigation, the officers found and seized roughly “26 grams of cocaine, 1.6 grams of methamphetamine, 3 grams of cannabis, two pharmaceutical-style pills, a knife, trafficking paraphernalia and a sum of cash.”

It was also discovered he was on release order conditions related to drug trafficking and possession charges which included a 24-hour curfew.

The 37-year-old has since been charged with:

– two counts, possession for the purpose of trafficking.

– one count, fail to stop for peace officer.

– one count, assault police officer with weapon.

– one count, operate a conveyance in a manner dangerous to the public.

– one count, resist arrest.

– one count, mischief under $5,000.

– four counts, fail to comply with release order condition.

– two counts, possession of the proceeds of crime under $5,000.
