New service centre for Nut Point Campground

Nut Point Campground in the Lac La Ronge Provincial Park will receive a new service centre.

The development was announced in the 2024-2025 provincial budget released last week. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport told larongeNOW in an email that site investigation is currently ongoing and the new facility will replace the existing one.

“The final location of the facility within the campground is not yet finalized, however, it will be near the existing facility. No reduction in services is expected during construction,” the email noted.

The provincial government expects to issue a request for proposals for construction of the new Nut Point Service Centre this spring and the facility will be open in the 2025 camping season. Further details on the facility such as cost will be available once the request for proposals is issued.

The provincial budget also announced $27 million for the continued construction of a new long-term care facility, as well as a commitment to build a new Grade 7-12 school at Pinehouse Lake.

“The board of trustees is thrilled that the province made the decision to invest in a new high school in Pinehouse Lake, and we are so pleased that the process is moving forward,” Northern Lights School Division board chairperson Richard Petit stated in a media release.

“I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the community at large in advocating for this much needed new educational facility. This certainly is an occasion worth celebrating.”

The new three-storey, two-wing per-floor long-term care home, which is expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2026, will include 80 resident rooms and will be owned and operated by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA). It will feature living areas, tub rooms, family rooms, a traditional healing space, a serenity room, a commercial kitchen and space for other health services.

The project also includes renovating the existing 16-bed long-term care space to provide increased La Ronge Health Centre space and improve several program areas, including therapies, an adult day program, and a new hemodialysis unit.
