More than $11,200 was raised at the Men of the North 2024 Polar Bear Plunge.

The event, which was held for the second time, occurred at the beach at La Ronge’s Patterson Park. It served as a fundraiser for both Men of the North, as well as Children North.

In total, 40 people participated, including La Ronge Mayor Joe Hordyski and La Ronge Regional Fire Department Chief Keaton Cloud.

“A lot of people in the audience came out to support the event and there were lots of laughs and I seen lots of smiles on people’s faces, especially during the end of winter,” said Men of the North founder Christopher Merasty.

“I know it has been a long and cold winter for us here in northern Saskatchewan, but we are coming near the end and soon it will be spring. This is a great opportunity for us to bring the community out and put some smiles on some people’s faces.”

Men of the North partnered with Children North, which offered the organization the chance to use its charitable receipt number. Children North received 40 per cent of the funds raised, which will go towards programming.

The remainder of the funds went to Men of the North to be used to renovate its office space along La Ronge Ave.

“We also had the Town of La Ronge come out there and support us by allowing us to use their excavator system to move the large ice chunks out of the water,” Merasty said.

“The regional fire department also supported and helped us to remove the ice out of the lake and we also helped them by contributing to doing an ice water training session for ice water rescue on Saturday morning.”

Men of the North and Children North are currently planning for the 2025 Polar Bear Plunge. Merasty noted for next year, they hope to purchase better mats and become more organized when it comes to having registration completed faster and waiver forms submitted earlier.
