Town council approves tax abatement, beautification grant programs

La Ronge council has approved a package of community development initiatives.

At a regular council meeting earlier this week, two new tax abatements and a grant program were given the greenlight. As of April 5, residents and business owners can apply for tax abatements that will provide a waiver of municipal taxes associated with property assessment changes due to a development.

The length and value of the tax abatement increases with the value of the commercial development, or in the case of residential developments, the net increase in dwelling units created. The timing of the residential incentive may also be ideal for homeowners planning to access the Saskatchewan Secondary Suite incentive that offers grants of up to $35,000 for renovation costs.

“Council is dedicated to addressing development challenges facing the community in a fiscally responsible manner,” La Ronge Mayor Joe Hordyski explained.

Deferring tax revenue associated with community growth, and offering grants for downtown revitalization, are ways council can partner with the community and encourage needed investment.”

The new grant program specifically targets revitalization and beautification of the downtown area. Applicants can receive up to $5,000 in matching funds towards a project that renovates, builds or cleans up storefronts and outdoor spaces.

The town is planning for a number of community projects in the coming years, which are highlighted by the ongoing construction of the new long-term care facility.

“These projects are anticipated to create jobs, impact housing needs and spark business expansion and development,” noted Jeff Long, the manager of planning and development.

“The town is preparing to service and market lands to meet these development needs, but council also wants to provide more direct initiatives.”
