Graduating La Ronge Ice Wolves defenceman Parker Layton has signed a pro contract with the Columbus River Dragons of the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

“My dad got a call from former coach Bob Beatty, asking if I’d be interested in going to Columbus, Georgia, to play hockey for another month or so,” said Layton in a release issued by the Ice Wolves on Wednesday.

“After some thinking and discussion with my parents, I made the decision to give it a go – and I was very excited.”

In three games with the River Dragons, Layton has recorded two points.

Layton, who is from La Ronge, most recently played with Ice Wolves, making 18 goals and 31 assists for 49 points in 54 games.

“The hockey is really good,” Layton said.

“I’ve only played three games, but I can tell from the experience that I’m going to learn a lot from these guys. It’s very fast-paced hockey with a lot of skill.”

The River Dragons sit first overall in the league with 122 points in 50 games. Columbus is back in action Friday when they host the Wytheville Blue Ridge Bobcats.

Layton noted he still plans to pursue post-secondary hockey next season.
