Art council members showcase own work at public gallery

The La Ronge Arts Council is inviting the public to view its membership show at Mistasinihk Place.

The exhibit will be displayed for the month of April, and it features 27 pieces from 16 different artists. The membership show has been ongoing for at least the last 15 years and the only requirement for submitting artwork was being a member of the arts council.

“There are mediums of all kinds,” explained Annalisa Heppner.

“There is a lot of felting and fabric work, there’s acrylic painting, oil painting, we have carvings. There’s some ceramic and traditional Indigenous artwork as well, tufting and beadwork.”

Heppner has three pieces of her own in the exhibit including one she created in February during the Canadian Challenge Dog Sled Race. It’s called The Canadian Challenge and it is composed of spray paint, acrylic and marker on a plywood panel. The Town of La Ronge loaned it to her so it can be featured in this month’s show.

The other artwork she submitted is a diptyke (set of two) based on Stranger Things and it’s called when he’s the 001, but she’s an 011.

Heppner recommends the exhibit to anyone in the tri-communities.

“There’s a wide variety of mediums and themes and I think every could enjoy them,” she said.

“It is also great to support your local art scene. There are a lot of creative people up here in our area and any opportunity to check it out is wonderful.”

The public is invited to an opening reception on April 9 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., where they will have a chance to meet the artists.

For the month of May, the gallery will feature artwork from students from schools in the tri-communities.
