Campers return to Lac La Ronge Provincial Park

The Lac La Ronge Provincial Park is now open for campers.

All campgrounds officially opened on Thursday with campers moving in within the first 24 hours of operations. In recent weeks, Park Manager Natasha Merriman explained staff have been busy getting the campgrounds ready for guests.

“The staff have been working really hard on-site on maintenance and clean up, getting docks installed and getting all the buildings up and running,” she said.

“Hooking up and testing waterlines, making sure that all of the facilities are running like showers and toilets and that kind of thing.”

There are no new rules campers should be aware of, but Merriman noted the construction of a service centre at Nut Point will begin sometime this summer. The new facility was announced by the provincial government in March.

At that time, the final location of the site within the campground was not yet finalized. It’s expected to be open for the 2025 camping season.

“It will be great. The one that we have currently is aging, so anything newer structured is good here,” Merriman added.

The Lac La Ronge Provincial Park is one of the largest parks in Saskatchewan. The park has close to 100 lakes and more than 30 documented canoe routes.

Aside from Nut Point, other campgrounds are at Churchill River, Devil Lake, MacKay Lake, Missinipe, Nemeiben Lake and Churchill River.

“There are still sites available for last-minute reservations this weekend in La Ronge and at other parks,” Merriman mentioned.

“If you plan to make a trip and book a site, you can visit saskparks.com. I know the weather isn’t the greatest, but camping season is open.”

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the May long weekend in La Ronge is expected to be cloudy and rainy. The temperature will fluctuate between 7 C and 10 C during the day. Sunny skies are forecasted to return to the area next week.
