Air Ronge, La Ronge declare June as Pride Month

May 29, 2024 | 2:13 PM

Air Ronge and La Ronge municipal councils have declared June as Pride Month in their respective communities.

The decision to do so was made at their latest regular council meetings, where permission was also given to raise a Pride Flag in each of their communities. In additional, Air Ronge decided to donate supplies such as paint for a Pride crosswalk near Gordon Denny Community School. That will occur during the second week of June.

La Ronge council also approved a single-lane parade along La Ronge Avenue for June 29. A festival will occur in Patterson Park on that same day as well.

“I think it’s really amazing they are showing support,” said Lac La Ronge Regional Pride President Dean Sanderson.

“We need it and I feel a sense of pride being part of the communities because of that.”

Sanderson explained while a date for a flag raising ceremony has yet to be set, he noted the committee hopes to hold it outside the Lac La Ronge Indian Band office as the ceremony was held in Air Ronge and La Ronge in previous years.

As for Pride committees in Prince Albert and Regina banning Saskatchewan Party and Saskatchewan United Party from attending any other their events due to their support over a pronoun policy enacted in October 23 called Bill 137, Sanderson said a decision hasn’t been made.

The bill requires parental consent before a child under 16 can use a different gender-related name or pronoun at school.

“We haven’t really discussed it well enough to make a statement,” Sanderson said.

“We haven’t come up with a collective statement about that. We don’t have a Sask. Party MLA in our region, so it really isn’t an issue for us, but not that we aren’t concerned about it.”

Lac La Ronge Regional Pride is seeking volunteers for its parade and festival at the end of the month. Those interested can contact Sanderson at 1-306-420-7275 or yvcpride@gmail.com.
