Northlands College celebrates 81 graduates in newly combined ceremony

Northlands College held a graduation ceremony at Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre for 81 students from across Northern Saskatchewan.

This year marked the first time Northlands held a combined graduation ceremony representing all of its divisions with 34 grads in trades and technology, 24 in health and wellness, 12 from university programming, and 11 in flexible learning (Adult 12).

“Graduates, be proud,” said Ken Gray, a member of the college’s board of governors.

“You have worked hard to achieve this success, you earned it. This education you have received will open doors for you that have been closed in the past. Take advantage of these new opportunities and expand your horizons. As well, tell your peers and your community members of the opportunities and advancements that you had and that are available at Northlands College. We would love to see more of you cross this stage.”

He told graduates they have taken the appropriate steps in determining a positive and productive future for themselves, their families and communities. Gray said the board is proud of their achievements and wish them well in their future careers.

Graduates are from communities across the North including Air Ronge, Bear Creek, Buffalo Narrows, Canoe Narrows, Creighton, Clearwater River, Denare Beach, Deschambault Lake, Fond du Lac, Ile-a-la Crosse, La Loche, La Ronge, Pelican Narrows, Pinehouse Lake, Southend, Stanley Mission, Sturgeon Landing, Timber Bay and Wollaston Lake. Others came from communities such as Calgary, Flin Flon, Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

Graduates received a certificate, diploma or degree in Mental Health and Wellness, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Practical Nursing, Carpentry, Plumbing and Pipefitting, Automotive Service Technician, Mineral Exploration Techniques, Office Administration, Adult 12, Liberal Arts, Administration, Sociology, Nursing, Social Work, Education and Dental Therapy.

Kyla Sanderson-Daniels of Denare Beach was named valedictorian for the Adult 12 class, while Deberah Derocher, Alyssa Charles and Darryl Cook, all from La Ronge, received awards in leadership.
