Declan drafted to Ice Wolves

Declan Borthwick couldn’t be more excited to be drafted by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s La Ronge Ice Wolves on Wednesday.

“It was awesome. It was super exciting,” he said.

“I couldn’t believe when they called my name, and getting to go back to where I grew up and watching them play. I always wanted to play for them, so it is pretty exciting.”

Declan began playing hockey at age four with La Ronge Minor Hockey, before moving to Prince Albert two years ago to play with the PA Pirates in the U15 AA team, earning 57 points in just 28 games.

The team rode the top the standings for most of the season, but were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by the Saskatoon Stallions.

“It was my first year ever playing high-level hockey, so once I got used to it, I adjusted well and started doing good,” Borthwick said.

Borthwick, who is a Grade 9 student at Carlton High School and who will be playing Warman Wildcats AAA team during the upcoming season, could play some exhibitions games with the Ice Wolves before potentially joining them for the 2025/2026 season.

La Ronge Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski explained Borthwick was likely at the top of a lot of other teams’ list going into the 2009-born draft. He noted he specifically made a trade to have the first pick in the draft so he could select Borthwick.

“He really accelerated. Our scouts had nothing but good things to say about him and that’s why we took him Number 1,” Kaminski explained.

“I know how dedicated this kid is. Declan and Danick Wilson, I remember going to the rink in the mornings at 7 a.m. and those two kids were on the ice shooting pucks and doing drills and everything. After 8 a.m., they would walk over the school.”

Kaminski added Borthwick will be a big part of the Ice Wolves’ success in future years. He said Borthwick has an unbelievable work ethic, he is passionate and Kaminski knows Borthwick and his family are excited for him to be drafted to the team.

As for the remainder of yesterday’s draft, Kaminki said it went very well with the team getting five out of the six forwards they had on their list.

“I think we got a steal with our 43rd pick with Liam Barzeele. He’s a little guy, he’s tenacious, he’s got great speed and a great skills set and a great compete level,” he said.

“On D, we missed out on one D wanted to get, but that happens and we got Dane Mansuy out of Regina and Austin Sittler, who is just a character and again great work ethic and plays the game hard, so I thought our draft went exceptional this year.”
