Exercise space under development at JRMCC

Jun 18, 2024 | 5:00 PM

A renovation of a garage at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) will be used as an exercise space for various programs.

Work on the project began about a month ago and it is expected to be completed by the end of August. Fitness centre supervisor Emma Smallwood explained a business hasn’t occupied the space for some time and it was being used for storage of equipment, kayaks and other miscellaneous items.

“As our CrossFit and youth strength conditioning classes have been growing, we needed another space to have those,” she said.

“Also, because our events at the JRMCC have gotten super busy as well, we would constantly be moving our equipment in and out and trying to collaborate schedules, so it would just be a lot easier if we could have our own space specifically for fitness classes. I talked to my boss and he was all good with it, so we went ahead.”

CrossFit and youth strength conditioning programs run for 10 to 12 weeks at a time and are held during the weekdays. During the last session, CrossFit attracted more than 60 attendees, while youth conditioning brought in about 20.

The space is also expected to be used for mom and tot classes, personal training sessions, La Ronge Minor Hockey off ice conditioning and beginner workouts.

In order to utilize the space, a water issue had to be rectified. It will also require the addition of flooring, new paint, the installation of cameras and speakers, and the equipment will need to be moved in.

“I am super excited for it to happen,” Smallwood said. “I have been thinking about it for a long time, so it nice to see it come to life.”

The total estimated cost for the project is $15,000.

The JRMCC is the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s main recreation facility located on Far Reserve. It includes a fitness centre, arena, gymnasium, boardroom, as well as sports and cultural grounds.
