La Ronge and Meadow Lake had the warmest July on record.

That’s according to data from Environment and Climate Change Canada, which showed the month mean temperature for La Ronge at 20.5 C (60 years of record keeping) and the monthly mean temperature for Meadow Lake at 19.5 C (76 years of record keeping. That represents a 3 C departure from normal for La Ronge and a 2.8 C departure from normal for Meadow Lake.

Meadow Lake also experienced its third driest July on record with 22 millimeters of rain out of a normal 75.2 mm. It was the 10th driest in La Ronge with 44.2 mm of rain out of a normal 80.5 mm.

“We had a pretty dramatic swing from June to July and it really just came down to the predominate upper pattern that we saw,” said meteorologist Justin Shelley.

“In June, it was a lot more unsettled. We had cooler air masses traversing through the province, whereas in July, we really got stuck in a pretty stagnant upper ridge pattern. It was a pretty significant blocking pattern … for about a week or so, which brought the hottest temperatures to the region.”

Shelley is forecasting above-average temperatures for August with average daytime highs around 23 C.

“We are going to see a gradual uptick in those temperatures from the low 20s for the rest of this week, and then by the weekend and into early next week, temperatures into the mid-20s,” he added.

With the Lac La Ronge Indian Band set to host the Tony Cote Summer Games starting Sunday, Shelley noted the start of the week will be quiet in terms of weather systems. Moving into Tuesday and Wednesday, however, he said residents and visitors can expect more unsettled patterns with a risk of scattered showers or isolated thunderstorms.

The current forecast is calling for sunny skies on Saturday, Sunday and Monday with a high of 26 C. There will be a mix of sun and cloud on Tuesday and a risk of showers on Wednesday.

“In terms of smoke and the air quality as well, there is still a number of wildfires in surrounding regions which is causing periodic impacts to air quality,” Shelley mentioned.

“There’s currently an air quality advisory out for the region for air quality values above seven to 10. We are seeing moderate the high readings at the moment, but it can fluctuate quickly day to day and even hour to hour.”

On Wednesday, organizers of the Games addressed concerns about the air quality and wildfires in Northern Saskatchewan.
