New record set at Eagle Point Classic

A new record has been set at the Pimiskatan Canoe Club’s 30th annual Eagle Point Classic on Saturday.

Trevor Robinson and Lori Mack of Saskatoon finished the 17.75-kilometre race in one hour, 47 minutes and 16 seconds, about one minute faster than the previous record. They were followed by Eddy Risseeuw and Nichole Golden of Saskatoon at one hour and 56 minutes, and Sid and Ragnar Robinson (no relation to Trevor Robinson) in one hour and 58 minutes.

Sid Robinson, who was also one of the organizers of the Eagle Point Classic, explained even though the record was broken by only about a minute, that is still significant.

“It is significant because the conditions weren’t ideal,” he explained.

“The race starts at Eagle Point Marina, but it goes through Downton Lake and then down Campbell Channel down the big side of the lake. A place around Marker 1 and then another place around there, the wind was coming in and creating some pretty big waves. Two canoes capsized. There was a safety boat there that helped them out a little bit. In my own canoe, we had to go to shore twice to dump water out, but Trevor and his partner Lori had no trouble, they just plowed right through it.”

Robinson called Trevor one of the better canoers in North America. He said he regularly competes in canoe races in the United States and eastern Canada.

In total, there were seven teams in the 17.75-km race and six in the seven-km race. Tyler Joorisity and Sukhchain Singh of La Ronge came first in the shorter race with a time of 49 minutes and nine seconds. They were followed by Nathan Forester and Morgan Layton in 55 minutes and 48 seconds, and Catriona Kaiser-Derrick and Brady Knight of Saskatoon with 59 minutes and 48 seconds.

With the club’s largest event now behind them, group members will go back to focusing on sprints every Wednesday and recreational paddles on Thursday. Robinson mentioned Dave Brundage, an original member of the club, is back this year teaching lessons.

He also said Morgan McKenzie and Mylee Roberts competed at the Saskatchewan Summer Games and Tony Cote Summer Games and both earned medals.

“There is some new young talent,” Robinson said. “We would always like to see more people, but it’s been a pretty good year.”
