Ice Wolves host Hockey School ahead of weekend Main Camp

The Ice Wolves are hosting its annual Hockey School in La Ronge this week ahead of its Main Camp starting on Friday in Aberdeen.

The Hockey School, which is for minor hockey players between the ages of five and 17, is full this year with 82 participants. It is described as a fundamental school, which includes skill building in the areas of power skating, crossovers, stops and starts, shooting, passing and tight turns.

Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminski explained it is a good way for young athletes to warm up for the minor hockey season about to begin.

“Some of the kids after the camp, they’ll go skate in Prince Albert for AA or whatever they are trying out for,” he said.

“It is good to get back on the skates and get the rust out and just work on your game, work on your skills, and working on your skating and get ready for the season coming up.”

Since the Ice Wolves’ Spring Camp in March, Kaminski has been busy recruiting players and preparing for this weekend’s Main Camp. He noted about 35 players who attend the Main Camp will be invited to La Ronge to participate in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) preseason exhibition games starting Sept. 2.

On that date, the Ice Wolves will host the Flin Flon Bombers at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. Other at-home exhibition dates are against the Battlefords North Stars on Sept. 4 and the Nipawin Hawks on Sept. 13. Away games include the Flin Flon Bombers on Sept. 6, the North Stars on Sept. 10, and the Hawks on Sept. 14.

All games, aside from the Sept. 14 match against the Hawks, have 7:30 p.m. start times and are expected to be open to fans. The final game against the Hawks will begin at 5 p.m. on Big River First Nation.

“We are trying to get all of our rookies in and Flin Flon is doing the same, so it will be our draft picks and the young guys who are coming from AAA to play a rookie game on Monday, then we have five other games to showcase the players to see what 25 we are going to keep for the year,” Kaminski said.

The La Ronge Ice Wolves ended last season with a 16-35-3-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record.
