Hordyski, four others acclaimed in La Ronge town council municipal election

La Ronge Mayor Joe Hordyski will continue in that role until 2028 after going uncontested in the town’s recent municipal election nomination period.

He will be joined by fellow councillors Abby Besharah, Terry Hunt and Viviana Ruiz Arcand, who were also acclaimed following the end of the recent nomination period. Newcomer Robert Pacey Sr. will also become a councillor this October as only those four individuals had entered their names for one of six councillor positions.

Since there wasn’t enough interest to form a council of seven, another nomination period will need to be called to fill the remaining two seats. If there had been more than enough interest for the positions, a municipal election would have been held Oct. 2.

Hordyski is a veteran politician having previously served on town council from 1991 to 2006. He was first elected as mayor in 1997. In 2020, he was elected as a councillor and subsequently became mayor during an October 2022 byelection following the sudden resignation of Colin Ratushniak.

Hordyski is a journeyman carpenter and owns J. Hordyski Contracting.

Besharah is the owner of Marker 47 Café and Ruiz Arcand is currently a vice-principal at Churchill Community High School. This will mark their second term on town council.

Hunt joined town council after winning the November 2022 byelection. He has been a resident of La Ronge since 1974 and he’s been employed in several sectors.

Pacey is a semi-retired aircraft maintenance engineer. He unsuccessfully ran in the November 2021 and 2022 byelections.

It appears councillors Matthew Klassen and Ryan Veteri will not resume their positions in October unless they decided to enter their names in the upcoming second call for nominations.

Coun. McPhail was acclaimed as the next NDP candidate on July 8 after nobody else came forward to contest it. He could replace current NDP MLA Doyle Vermette if successful in the next provincial general election scheduled in October 2024.
