Five students were recognized for their hard work this week by Lt. Gov. Russell Mirasty during his tour of Northern Saskatchewan.

The Northern Student Achievement Awards were established in 1989 by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education and the Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence recognizes one student at each grade level from grades seven to 12.

The award criteria include academic standing, school attendance, and involvement in cultural activities in the 2023/2024 academic year.

This week’s award recipients were Martha McGonigle (Grade 9) from Ile-a-la Crosse’s Rossignol High School, Kaycee Fontaine (Grade 11) from La Loche’s Dene High School, Janessa Kahmahkotayo (Grade 8) from Cumberland House’s Ministik Community School, and Maggie Herel (Grade 10) from La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School.

Creighton Community School Grade 12 graduate Holly Currie was the final recipient, but did not attend the ceremony as she is attending university in British Columbia.

Due to fires, Mirasty was not able to visit Hector Thiboutot Community School in Sandy Bay. An award package will be sent to the school to be given to Grade 7 award recipient Kenya Caribou.
