September in La Ronge second warmest on record

Oct 3, 2024 | 3:48 PM

According to data from Environment and Climate Change Canada, La Ronge experienced its second warmest September on record.

The data shows the monthly mean temperature in La Ronge was 14.3 C, which represents a 4.6 C departure from normal (9.7 C). That departure was evident in many regions of Saskatchewan as well, with Estevan, Meadow Lake, North Battleford, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current and Yorkton all coming in at their third warmest on record.

“The Prairies, including southern, central and getting into northern Saskatchewan were under the influence of an upper ridge, which usually brings in heat and sometimes humidity from Texas, California and basically anywhere from the south,” said meteorologist Danielle Desjardins.

“In September, we were under the influence for more or less the whole month of this upper ridge.”

Desjardins explained La Ronge can also expect snow with a mix of rain on Saturday, before it tapers off and leads into a relatively dry week or so. She noted tonight southern portions of the province will experience the first frost of the season.

“We have the predictions for the first half of October and it looks like it is going to be warmer than average again, so not quite as warm as September, except for this time of year, temperatures in the high teens to low 20s is about five or six degrees above normal,” Desjardins said.

“We are excepting the first half of October to be warmer than average and we are not expecting a whole lot of precipitation for the first half of the month.”

Precipitation in La Ronge for the month of September was the 28th driest on record. There was 46.5 millimeters of rain from a normal 56.1 mm. That’s 83 per cent of normal.

The forecast for Friday in La Ronge is calling for a mix of sun and cloud with a temperature of 14 C. That will be followed by snow and rain on Saturday with a high of 7 C, and sunny skies on Sunday and Monday with temperatures of 14 C and 16 C, respectively.
