Ice Wolves prepare to host back-to-back games against Battlefords North Stars

Twelve games into the 2024-2025 regular season, the La Ronge Ice Wolves currently have seven losses and five wins for a total of 11 points.

The Ice Wolves most recently hosted the Yorkton Terriers where they fell 6-5. They took an early 3-1 lead in the first period, but the Terriers quickly closed the score in the second, which ended in a 5-5 tie.

A final goal for the Terriers in the third sealed the deal and they earned two points after a 6-5 win.

Jacob Cossette and Sage Roberts, both from La Ronge, found some success during the game. Cossette made two goals while Roberts secured one. Other Ice Wolves goals came from Tyson Matthews and Dimitri Toporowski.

“I don’t know if the guys thought it would be easy, and I think that’s been our problem all year is the consistency to bring it for 60 minutes,” said Ice Wolves head coach Kevin Kaminski.

“Everyone has to step up here and pride the little things, keep it simple. I think our execution and our work ethic has to get way better. I think we’re a team that can grind things down and take over in the third, but we give up way too many opportunities. There’s too many odd man rushes, our puck decisions have to be way better. Everyone has had time to adjust … and now we got to start getting results. That’s the bottom line.”

Kaminski thinks the team’s current standings are good, and that he and assistant coach Kyle Schneider really like the team when they are playing. He said the Ice Wolves have beaten some strong teams so far this season and need to start believing in themselves.

Kaminski noted the Ice Wolves need to work on execution, work ethic and being more responsible in the offensive zone.

“We score five, we give up six. We only give up one in Humboldt, then we don’t score any,” he said.

“You go out on the road and only give up one, you should win that game. It’s about checking our backbone here and finding ways to win every night we can.”

The Ice Wolves next host the Battlefords North Stars on Friday and Saturday at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. The North Stars currently have eight losses and five wins for 13 points.

“They have a good team. I think we’re going to have to bring it and play for 60 minutes,” Kaminski said.

“This is a huge two-game series in the standings. We’re two points behind them and we can leapfrog them this weekend. There is no reason not to. It is time to show our character and get things going.”
