Oct 28, 2024 | 12:00 PM

A man responsible for a violent assault at Montreal Lake Cree Nation, that left the victim with a long term brain injury, has received a prison sentence of five and a half years.

Isiah Roberts appeared in court on Oct. 10 and in relation to the events that occurred on May 29, 2023, guilty pleas were entered to aggravated assault, obstruction and sexual assault.

At the time of the incident, police were told of an assault on a woman in a home in Montreal Lake that lasted for several hours.

She was later taken to hospital with serious injuries and left severely traumatized.

When police first attempted to arrest Roberts, he fled into a nearby wooded area in order to avoid capture.

Among the reasons for the length of the sentence was had the case gone to trial there would have been evidentiary issues. There were also concerns with the victim’s ability to testify and Roberts had a minimal criminal record.

In addition to the assault, he also received a one-year sentence for attempting to intimidate witnesses not to testify. This will run concurrently to the prison sentence.

Roberts received one year credit for time spent in remand custody and will be on the sex offender registry for a period of 10 years. He’s also prohibited for life from owning or possessing any firearms.
