La Ronge 89ers join Treaty Six Hockey League

Nov 14, 2024 | 3:57 PM

The La Ronge 89ers are the newest members of the Treaty Six Hockey League.

The La Ronge 89ers, which was formerly a senior hockey team, have been dormant for several years as of 2024. They have now transitioned to a recreational team for players ages 18 and up.

“That is kind of the focus right now is to get our young guys skating and playing some organized hockey,” said Kevin Roberts, the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre’s (JRMCC) director of sports and recreation.

“It’s different than other leagues in that it is a weekday league, so a lot of the games are played during the week. I know it makes things a little tough for guys going to school or guys working, but that’s why they allow for a big roster. Most times, they have very few cancellations in the league, and if there was, it is usually just weather related.”

The Treaty Six Hockey League has had at least one previous season in 2023-2024. Other teams involved include Frog Lake, Makwa Sahgaiehcan, Moosomin, Onion Lake, Red Pheasant, Sandy Lake, Saulteaux, Sweetgrass, Waterhen Lake and Whitefish.

Roberts explained there is currently approximately 20 men of the team, including all of those who won the championship in the hockey tournament held at the JRMCC this past weekend. The JRMCC will be the home arena for the La Ronge 89ers.

Roberts also noted while fundraising, admission and JRMCC sponsorship will assist in paying for the team’s expenses, individual players will also be required to contribute.

“Usually at the adult level, we expect them to put something in from themselves,” he said.

“They have to invest in the program itself as well. We don’t expect to pay for everything. These are grown men, they are adults, and we always expect them to do what they need to do on their part to make things happen.”

The La Ronge 89ers will play their first game of the season Nov. 25 at the JRMCC at 8 p.m. Roberts explained the Treaty Six Hockey League will hold playoffs, but the details of which are yet to be determined.
