New Air Ronge council sworn into office

The inaugural meeting of the new Air Ronge village council included the administration of the oath of office, the appointment of the deputy-mayor, as well as members to various committees.

All members of council were elected to their positions via acclamation including Mayor Julie Baschuk, long-time councillor Terry DesRoches, Tabitha Burr who will begin her second term, as well as newcomers James Hope Howard and Dave Smallwood.

A motion was passed at the meeting to appoint DesRoches as deputy mayor for the period of November 2024 through November 2026. Burr will then assume that position for the remainder of their four-year term.

The municipality has representation on a number of committees or boards, external committees, and member corporations. The following members of council were appointed as follows: DesRoches and Smallwood (Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Management Corporation), Baschuk and Burr (La Ronge Regional Fire Services), DesRoches and Smallwood (Lac La Ronge Regional Water Corporation), Burr and Howard (Woodlands and Waterways), DesRoches (Visions North), Burr and Howard (Northern Planning Commission), Howard (Environmental Quality Control), Howard (Lac La Ronge Provincial Park), Smallwood (Air Ronge Community Library), Baschuk and Howard (HUB Steering Committee), DesRoches (Northern Municipal Trust Account), and Baschuk (Emergency Management Officer).

The first regular meeting of council will occur Wednesday. Items on the agenda include audit and Associated Engineering presentations, the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association Convention, business license applications, council renumeration, a Bigstone Lighting Project proposal and more.
