Christmas Dance Showcase spreads holiday cheer

Dec 9, 2024 | 5:10 PM

Those who attended the Christmas Dance Show at Churchill Community High School were sure to leave with a festive feeling.

That’s according to Tri-Community Dance Club chairperson Genevieve Candelora Kustiak, who said the Christmas theme was a departure from what is usually done for the winter showcase. She noted the performances included black and white outfits, seasonal accessories and Christmas music.

“We decided to do a Christmas showcase and just spread a little bit of festive cheer … and showcase all of our classes,” Kustiak said.

“We had local voice teacher Kaylene Bagwell and local artist Brandon White, who led Christmas carols throughout the showcase. In between some of the pieces, they came out and sang and got the audience involved in singing, and then afterwards we had some hot chocolate and cookies and just a little reception as a thank you to all of the community for coming and supporting our dancers. It was just a really festive and amazing event.”

Kustiak explained the dance club continues to mature since it was formed in 2021. For instance, she said 2024 featured registration for the entire year and dancers had more of a choice to specialize in specific forms of dance.

“This year, we expanded to offer more classes that are genre specific, so we kind of divided out to what it used to be, which was a combination of a little bit of everything, to now children can register in classes more specific to their interest,” Kustiak added.

“We have ballet and contemporary styles, which are grouped together in one class, then we have jazz and hip hop grouped together in one class, and then tap classes. That allows people to register in one or multiple styles they are interested in.”

There are approximately 90 participants between the ages of three and 14 registered with the dance club. That’s consistent with previous years.

The dance club also started fundraising for a special event they, along with the La Ronge Arts Council, will be hosting in March 2025 by holding a 50/50 draw and selling poinsettias. They will be hosting Ballet Jorgën out of Toronto, who will be performing Sleeping Beauty.

Those interested in purchasing tickets can do so on Dec. 12 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Air Ronge’s Elk’s Hall. Tickets, which are expected to sell out, are $25 for regular seats and $15 for lower floor seating.
