Drugs and weapons bust in Stanley Mission, results in two year sentence

A search of a home in Stanley Mission, in which police found nearly 800 grams of drugs and over a dozen guns, has resulted in a two year jail sentence.

Jonas William Hardlotte, 37, appeared Tuesday morning at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert and entered a guilty plea to a single count of possession of a loaded, prohibited firearm (handgun).

The remaining seven charges stemming from the RCMP search warrant on March 14, 2023, were stayed by the Crown. Also found in the home was a 22-caliber homemade gun. There were 11 rifles and four shotguns located inside a crawl space.

Accepting the joint submission presented by the Crown and defence, Justice T.J. Keene commented we live in a society that’s worried about firearms, especially handguns.

“They seem to be the weapon of choice for people up to no good,” he said.

Also found in the home was 31 grams of methamphetamine, 95 grams of cocaine, 672 grams of cannabis and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

Prosecutor Stephen Jordan told paNOW Tuesday’s sentencing hearing was the result of extensive dialogue between himself and the defence, and added Hardlotte entered a guilty plea to the most serious of the charges.

In the courtroom, Jordan said had the case gone to trial, there were would have been challenges with respect to witness testimony and a possible Charter application.

With credit for time spent in remand custody, Hardlotte’s sentence works out to time served, however he will remain in custody on other outstanding charges. He’s also received a 10-year firearms ban

Also charged was Hardlotte’s common law partner Roseanne Halkett, who was also in court on Tuesday, and had all her charges stayed.

The search of the home was related to information provided to police five days prior, and a report of a serious assault and robbery of a woman from June, 2022.

From that investigation, both Hardlotte and Halkett are awaiting trial on multiple charges including aggravated assault, attempted murder and confinement.

The robbery charge was withdrawn.

The trial has been scheduled for the week of Jan. 13 at Court of King’s Bench.

Update: On Jan. 13, Hardlotte received a 10 year peace bond and a no contact order with the complainant. Halkett’s charges were stayed.
