Filipino carolers celebrate Christmas while raising funds for non-profit

Dec 12, 2024 | 5:22 PM

Spreading the spirit of Christmas is the main objective for a local Filipino caroler group.

In the last week or so, about 10 volunteers with the non-profit La Ronge and District Filipino Canadian Community have been visiting businesses and local households to sing Christmas carols such as Joy to the World, Silent Night and some of their own carols in the Tagalog language.

Sonny Montilla, who is the president of the Filipino non-profit, said 2024 marks the first time they’ve performed at local businesses since they began singing three years ago. So far, they have visited Boreal Colours, Kostas, KFC, La Ronge Tattoo, La Ronge Electronic Source and Watt Agencies with more performances planned for next week.

“Filipinos celebrate Christmas in a big way because of their strong Catholic faith, which makes the holiday deeply rooted in their culture, leading to a long festive season that starts as early as September with a focus on family gatherings, special food, and vibrant decorations like the iconic ‘parol’ star lanterns,” Montilla noted.

“Essentially, Christmas is a major event that brings the community together.”

Earlier this month, Montilla sent a letter to local businesses and organizations asking if they would like the carolers to come to their location and sing some songs. Those who decide to do so are expected to contribute to the group’s fundraising efforts. A portion of all funds raised will be donated to a local unnamed non-profit organization.

Anyone interested in a visit from the carolers can contact Montilla at 1-306-425-8188 to set up an arrangement.

In addition to the carolers, the Filipino community is planning a large Christmas party on Dec. 21 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. The event includes a feast, gift exchange, dancing and karaoke.

In 2023, approximately 250 people attended with more expected this year. Montilla added there are approximately 320 Filipinos living in the tri-communities.

“It is going to be a memorable event,” Montilla remarked.
