Warmer than average temperature expected for La Ronge on Christmas Day

Dec 20, 2024 | 12:26 PM

The forecast for Christmas in La Ronge is expected to be warmer than normal.

That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada, which is predicting a mix of sun and cloud with a daytime high of -4 C on Dec. 25. The temperature will warm up significantly over the weekend as an upper-level ridge building in the Prairies brings warm Pacific air over the Rockies.

The daytime temperature for this time of year is -14 C.

“We’re seeing a weak system coming through Saskatchewan,” said meteorologist Danielle Desjardins.

“By tonight, it’s going to give maybe two to four centimeters to La Ronge and to a large portion of Saskatchewan, but that’s actually leading into a big warm up for pretty much the entire province. We are going to see an end to the extreme cold that we have been seeing over the last little bit.”

Next week, temperatures in La Ronge will be in the mid-minus single digits with it rising passed 0 C in some parts of province. Desjardins explained weather models are showing mixed results for New Year’s Day with temperatures either remaining the same or starting to cool off.

After Friday night, there isn’t much precipitation into the foreseeable future, however, there could be some rain or freezing rain in the extreme southwest corner of Saskatchewan in the Leader, Swift Current and Cypress Hills areas.

Desjardins wants to remind motorist to check the Highway Hotline before travelling as the warm weather can lead to slushy conditions. She also recommends travelling with winter essentials in case an issue does arise.

“That thaw might make roadways a little bit messy and, as temperatures dip below 0 C overnight, that will definitely freeze up,” she said.
