La Ronge long-term care facility construction at halfway mark

Feb 18, 2025 | 4:56 PM

Construction of the new long-term care facility in La Ronge has reached the halfway mark.

The update was provided in a provincial government news release issued on Tuesday. That was welcome news for fundraising co-ordinator Jacob Page, who has been tasked with assisting to raise the $5 million northern residents will be need to contribute to purchase furniture, fixtures and equipment for the building.

“One of the biggest things we’re going to be starting pretty soon here is community information sessions, which will have a fundraising aspect with them,” he said.

“We really want to get the word out there to the community members, not just La Ronge … so they understand that yes this building is being built in La Ronge, but it is the La Ronge and area long-term care facility.”

Page didn’t want to reveal how much money has been raised so far, noting that information will be released to the public soon. He also didn’t want to release exact figures for how much communities such as Air Ronge, La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band will need to come up with as part of the $5 million contribution.

“We do have some percentages that were given to us by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), but I can’t really share that at this time because we are kind of working through a couple things about how we are going to go abouts this, because we do have a lot of business from down south that gets put into La Ronge here, so we want to grab everyone from the province right now as we start our plan,” Page said.

Current fundraising efforts at the moment include seniors bingo and a Chase the Ace draw.

The provincial government is contributing $100 million to the project, which is a three-story facility consisting of 80 private rooms with bathrooms, increasing capacity by 64 beds from the current space in the health centre. The home will also feature shared living areas, family rooms, a commercial kitchen and cafeteria, a serenity room and traditional healing space.

Construction activities currently underway include completion of the building envelope including glazing, interior partition walls, masonry brick installation, electrical and mechanical rough-ins, roof insulation and membrane and interior steel wall layout.

The new long-term care home will be owned and operated by the SHA. Once residents can be moved into the new home, the current long-term care space in the health centre will be renovated to improve program areas including therapies and add an adult day program and new hemodialysis unit.

“”We are thrilled to see the continued momentum of this new long-term care home project,” said Andrew McLetchie, the vice-president of Integrated Northern Health with the SHA.

“The SHA is committed to safe, quality care as close to home as possible. With significantly more capacity and amenities than the current facility, this new home will deliver on that commitment to residents of the La Ronge area.”
