Organizers ready for 2025 Don Allen Saskaloppet

Feb 25, 2025 | 5:00 PM

Organizers of the 2025 Don Allen Saskaloppet are expecting a good turnout due to favourable weather conditions in the forecast.

The premiere event, which is the largest hosted in conjunction with the La Ronge Ski Club, is set for Feb. 28 and March 1. All races, which have a large range in distances, start at 10 a.m. March 1 on the ice in front of the La Ronge Legion Hall with the exception of the two-kilometer and the 55-km events.

The 55-km events start at 8:30 a.m. at the Legion Hall, while the 2 km event starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Nut Point Campground. The overnight Kupesewin events begin Feb. 28.

“We have had in the past, people who have come from other countries to come ski in this event,” said Saskaloppet Chairperson Kevin Jackson.

“We certainly have people from all over Saskatchewan that come up for this day and for the overnight event too. I would like to name it a premiere event for La Ronge and Northern Saskatchewan.”

The number of participants who compete in the Saskaloppet fluctuates every year and it is largely dependent on weather conditions. Most years average over 200 skiers, but with ideal conditions, there have been years where participation hovered around 350 skiers.

For March 1, Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting a mix of sun and cloud and a high of -1 C during the day.

“Saturday was a little scary because it looked like we were going to get a massive melt, but I was out skate skiing today (Monday) and the trails look amazing,” Jackson said.

“The crews have been out there doing some really good work, and I hear they are going to be out there right up until Friday night to make sure the event is premiere and pristine for Saturday morning.”

Those who would like to register for the Saskaloppet have until Wednesday at 11 p.m. Anyone who wants to register can do so online here.
