Alberta Clippers dumps heavy snow on La Ronge

Mar 14, 2025 | 5:00 PM

Residents of La Ronge were digging out of a large snowfall on Friday.

“We did see an Alberta Clipper system develop and track to the east and that brought a lot of snow and mixed precipitation to the province,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Danielle Desjardins.

“A heavier band of snow in Northern Saskatchewan and then some lighter snow and mixed precipitation in the south.”

While there was no snowfall amount available for the La Ronge area, Ile-a-la Crosse received 19.6 centimeters of snow, followed by Emma Lake with 7.6 cms and North Battleford with 1.7 cms. Desjardins noted it would be safe to say areas in Northern Saskatchewan, in general, received about 20 cms.

“It was a pretty potent system and it is slowly tapering off today,” she said.

“The amounts did drop off quite substantially in the Meadow Lake area and southward.”

The forecast shows colder than average temperatures in La Ronge for the next several days. Saturday will reach a high -10 C with a 30 per cent chance of flurries, Sunday is expected to be -10 C and sunny, and Monday should be -6 C and cloudy.

Sunny skies will return for Wednesday and Thursday with highs of -4 C and -1 C, respectively. The average temperature for this time of year is a high of -2 C and a low of -15 C.
