Alleged car jacker enters not guilty pleas

A Prince Albert man charged after multiple carjackings, is maintaining his innocence and has elected to be tried by judge alone at Court of King’s Bench.

Angus Heathen’s attendance was waived when his matters were discussed Friday morning at provincial court. Not guilty enters were entered by his lawyer Chris Koban who also confirmed the charges will next to be spoken at a preliminary inquiry hearing.

Both Aug. 11 and Aug. 12 have been set aside for the hearing which will provide the judge an opportunity to hear the Crown’s determine and make a decision on whether there’s enough to commit the case for trial.

The incidents occurred on Oct. 17 and 24, 2024.

The first car jacking occurred on highway 55, not far from Little Red River Park. The victims were threatened with a gun and their red 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup was taken.

Almost one hour later, the suspects in the red Dodge were near the north parking lot of Little Red River Park when they robbed two more people of a black 2013 Kia Sportage.

The following week, a 66 year-old man working alone at a construction site north of the city, was robbed of his vehicle and shot in the upper arm. About an hour later, he walked to the highway to get help and was found by a passing tow truck driver who called for an ambulance.

Meanwhile the suspects involved fled northeast towards towards Cumberland House.

Both Heathen and Melissa McCallum were spotted by the Saskatoon Air Support Unit running along the bank of the Saskatchewan River three kilometres from where they first entered the bush, near Thunder Rapid Lodge.

McCallum, who has previously entered not guilty pleas and will also appear at the August preliminary inquiry hearing, was treated by EMS for minor injuries caused by the collision of the stolen Dodge Ram pickup and heavy equipment that was working on Highway 123.

A third suspect, Dallas Fulton, has yet to be located and was reported as missing.

Meanwhile another man who was charged after the first car jacking, Bruno Bear, previously entered guilty pleas and received a three year sentence.
