SaskPower busy with infrastructure projects in and near La Ronge

SaskPower has been busy upgrading power lines between Tracey Road and La Ronge in recent months.

The new line will be about 73 kilometers long and run alongside Highway 2 from Air Ronge south to the junction with Tracey Road. Rebuilding it will help ensure reliable power for years to come and upgrading the line’s capacity from 72 kilovolts to 138 kV will support future power demand.

“We started construction on the first section of the project, which is from the Tracey Road regulator to the Highway Creek regulator. That’s about 36 kilometers. That started in October 2024 and we expect to have that complete by this fall,” said a SaskPower spokesperson.

“Once that’s complete, Section 2 from that Highway Creek regulator to La Ronge substation, we expect to start in October 2025 and be complete by fall 2026. All the work, including the salvaging of the old lines, will be done by 2027.”

The Crown corporation is also currently replacing 97 poles and reinforce 61 existing ones in the tri-communities. The work is approximately 33 per cent completed and is expected to be finished by the end of July.

The project is part of the SaskPower’s Joint Use Upgrade Program in partnership with SaskTel. The company plans to expand its infiNET (fiber optic internet) service throughout the tri-communities.

The SaskTel infiNET fibre optic network replacement is a multi-year initiative that will replace the current copper-based network. SaskTel is investing more than $280 million to bring infiNET to over 200 rural communities by the end of 2027.

So far, SaskPower has upgraded more than 2,000 poles in over 100 communities across the province.
