Silzer awarded Sask. Player of the Year

Swift Current’s Rylan Silzer, who played with the La Ronge Ice Wolves for three seasons, said it’s an honour to be named the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) Sask. Player of the Year.

“Growing up in Saskatchewan and always dreaming of playing in the SJ and actually winning that award feels great,” he remarked.

“I thought I had a great year. It was a good year for me. I produced some offence, which is good, because I kind of consider myself a shutdown d-man, so that was nice. It’s too bad we couldn’t get into the playoffs, but we fought until the end.”

Silzer, who was also nominated for Top Defenceman, had a strong showing this season with the Ice Wolves. In 49 games, he scored 13 goals and made 29 assists for 42 points. Last season he earned 27 points and, in the season before that, he earned 14.

At the Ice Wolves awards banquet on Sunday, Silzer received recognition as the team’s Most Valuable Player, Top Defenceman, as well as Best Playmaker. He was the team’s captain this past season, and at 20 years old, he is no longer eligible to play in the SJHL.

“It was an amazing privilege. For the boys to trust me to be their leader, it was awesome. I enjoyed it all,” Silzer said.

Silzer also wanted to thank Head Coach Kevin Kaminski and Assistant Coach Kyle Schneider for taking a chance on him. He called them the best coaches he ever had, and he doesn’t regret anything about his hockey career in La Ronge.

Silzer has been playing hockey since he was four years old and he spent his earlier years in Swift Current in the minor hockey program. Just prior to being recruited to the Ice Wolves, he spent time playing AAA midget in Warman.

With the SJHL now behind him, Silzer would like to continue playing hockey and he hopes to attend university.
