Local musicians advance to provincial festival in Regina

It’s been a cultural experience this week for those participating in the La Ronge Music Festival.

That’s according to festival president Melanie Mack, who explained the four-day event included 46 participants doing 115 entries. She said that number is on par with previous years.

“We have a diverse range of music. We have voice, musical theatre, classical piano, pop piano and strings,” Mack noted.

“Our strings section is new to our festival as we have added more string players. That’s an exciting addition to our festival and also the Saskatchewan Orchestral Association is supporting this as well by providing some scholarships for our string players this year.”

Some of the participants have been involved with the festival for more than 10 years and Mack said it has been a pleasure to watch them grow and blossom into talented musicians. Several have already been selected to advance to provincials in Regina from May 29 to June 1 including Peyton Bell in voice, Amelia Putz in musical theatre, Serenity Mack in lieder, voice and musical theatre, and Alina Mack in piano, violin and lieder.

This year’s adjudicators were Peggy L’Hoir from Biggar and Kristine Beer of Regina. Accompanist Michele Hupaelo of Saskatoon was also in attendance.

“It’s really great for musicians to have this opportunity to be encouraged along their journey because they put many hours of hard work into it, so to be able to come here and be able to perform for an audience and be able to receive all of the encouragement and feedback from an adjudicator is really valuable to them,” Mack said.

The public is invited to witness the talent that occurred this week at the Outstanding Performance Concert on Thursday at 7 p.m. at La Ronge’s Alliance Church.
