Trial dates confirmed for MLCN murder case

Two weeks have been set aside this fall for the trial of a man accused of second-degree murder.

Walker Smith’s jury trial has been scheduled to start Oct. 27.

That was the outcome of Friday’s pre-trial hearing at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

In the early morning hours of Nov. 12, 2023, Waskesiu/Montreal Lake RCMP received a request to help EMS at a residence on the reserve.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured man who was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. The victim was identified as 41-year-old Kevin Stewart from Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

A short investigation was conducted which led to police arresting Smith who was 29 at the time.

A not guilty plea has previously been entered to both the murder charge and uttering threats.
