Lac La Ronge cabin owners granted extension to build back period following wildfire

Owners of destroyed cabins on Lac La Ronge will be given an extension on the time required for them to rebuild.

At an annual meeting of the Lac La Ronge Cottage Owners Association on July 19 at Eagle Point, it was announced the provincial government would increase the time to start rebuilding on leased land from two years to four.

The meeting was attended by about 60 cabin owners, as well as Lac La Ronge Provincial Park Manager Natasha Merriman and the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport Manager of Cottage Leasing and Development Tera McNabb.

“I think they are finding there aren’t that many contractors in La Ronge and the ones that are there are getting older, and some guys don’t want to work on the lake and all of that,” said Cottage Owners Association President Rod Spooner.

“It was a good gesture for them to extend the period because it gives people a little bit more time to get their ducks lined up.”

Out of the approximately 230 cabins on Lac La Ronge, 30 were destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire in June. It resulted in a 10-day evacuation for thousands of residents in the region, including those living in the tri-communities of Air Ronge, La Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

In addition to an increase in the build back period, owners of destroyed cabins were also asking for lease fees to be waived for 2025. Cabin owners pay varying amounts for their lease fees as the total cost is determined by the evaluated property value.

“They were going to take that back and discuss it amongst themselves,” Spooner noted.

“They certainly couldn’t make their decision at the meeting. We felt fairly positive about their response to all of this.”
