Much needed precipitation is headed for North-Central Saskatchewan into the weekend.

“We are starting to see a little bit more of an unsettled pattern in a couple of systems moving through,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada Scientist Christy Climenhaga, who noted there will be showers on Wednesday and Thursday.

“There’s another system looking to make its way through for the weekend, which will mean some cooler weather and also some steadier rain. [It’s] still a little far out, so in terms of amounts and exact locations, it’s still up in the air. We could still see a 20 to 40 millimeter run through the southern half of the province stretching from La Ronge to the south with locally higher amounts.”

Areas expected to receive rain over the next four days include La Ronge, Meadow Lake, Melfort, Nipawin, North Battleford, Prince Albert and surrounding communities. Showers could last until Monday and even stretch further into next week.

The rain will be a welcome sight for those living in La Ronge and Prince Albert, which just experienced their second driest July on record, as well as those in North Battleford where it was the third driest. La Ronge had 17.6 mm of rain (normal 89.1 mm), Prince Albert had 4.9 mm (77.2 mm) and North Battleford had 14.5 mm (77.4 mm).

The normal precipitation amount for August in La Ronge is 65 mm, while in North Battleford and Prince Albert is around 50 mm.

“It’s been incredibly dry through the northern half of Saskatchewan, especially,” Climenhaga noted.

The weather systems will bring with it cooler temperatures, which will be a nice break from the hotter temperatures that triggered some heat warnings last week. The temperature in North-Central Saskatchewan is forecasted to hover around the 20 C mark throughout the weekend.
